IPL 2025: Rohit Sharma is now a World Cup winning captain. On June 29, 2024, Rohit-led Team India scaled mount greatness as they painted Barbados blue by outplaying Aiden Markram's South Africa by seven runs in the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. The year, till then hadn't been good for Rohit. He was replaced as the Mumbai Indians skipper, a move that did not fit well with the franchise's fans. His bat did not do the talking and there were all sorts of negative things that were being spoken about him.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma found his best form as the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup started. There was never a question about skipper Sharma's tactical capabilities. He won 5 titles for Mumbai Indians and that is no mere feat. Rohit is the only one standing right up there with MS Dhoni to have accomplished such a feat in IPL. But his captaincy snub from Mumbai Indians, not only changed the dynamics of the franchise, but also the Indian Premier League.

The Legacy Of Rohit Sharma

2013 was the year when everything changed for Indian cricket and also Mumbai Indians and at the forefront of it was 26-year-old Rohit Sharma. This was the same year when Sharma was promoted as India's opener in Champions Trophy, the tournament which India eventually went on to win and it was the same year when Mumbai Indians won their first IPL trophy. 2013 is indeed the year when Rohit Sharma started to dominate both IPL and global cricket.

The shrewd tactical capability of Rohit Sharma as a skipper can be testified by the fact that he has registered 87 wins and has 5 IPL trophies in his kitty. This is the reason, why people couldn't fathom any other individual as the Mumbai Indians captain, let alone the fans of the franchise.

Rohit has now captained India in four ICC events ( 2022 T20 World Cup, WTC Finals in 2021, ODI World Cup in 2023 and the 2024 ICC Men's T29 World Cup) and has now earned himself the immortal glory of becoming a World Cup winning skipper. In some ways Mumbai Indians' plan of replacing Rohit as the skipper of the side has backfired, but the burning question here is that should Rohit be captaining any other IPL team?

Time To Unleash Rohit The Destructive Batter

Captaincy does come with a lot of pressure and tends to take an individual away from his natural game. Rohit was quick to announce his retirement after India won their second T20 World Cup. There are speculations that Sharma might enter the auction pool ahead of IPL 2025. If it ends up happening, franchises will break their banks to secure the services of Rohit.

Rohit is in the last phase of his career and his main priority will be to enjoy his game, to enjoy his batting. The captaincy snub earlier this year came as a blessing in disguise for India's T20 and ODI skipper. The 'Hitman' amassed a total of 417 runs, his best season after 2016. But what caught eyeballs was his strike rate which jumped to 150.00. Rohit played freely and the results and stats prove how lethal he was.

Only time will tell if Sharma continues to stay with Mumbai Indians or chooses to go elsewhere. But whichever jersey Rohit Sharma wears, he should be allowed to compete purely as a batter. Rohit Sharma has now relinquished India's T20 captaincy and the job of a leader will only add excessive pressure on the batter and will keep him away from enjoying his game and giving his teams a blazing start.
