Jasprit Bumrah Overtakes Ashwin to Become No. 1 Test Bowler in Latest ICC Rankings After IND vs BAN
Jasprit Bumrah claims the top spot from R Ashwin as the No. 1 Test bowler in the most recent ICC rankings update after India beat Bangladesh in 2 Test series.
In the second Test match set from September 27 to October 1, India defeated Bangladesh by 7 wickets. India won the series 2-0 with this victory. Ravichandran Ashwin won Player of the Series; Yashasvi Jaiswal, with his outstanding performance—72 and 51 runs—was named Player of the Match. Not insignificant contributions also came from Mominul Haque for Bangladesh and KL Rahul for India. This came after India’s first Test win against Bangladesh by 280 runs in Chennai.
Jasprit Bumrah Ascends to No. 1 Test Bowler After Series Against Bangladesh
Jasprit Bumrah topped Ravichandran Ashwin in world Test bowl rankings on October 2. This amazing ascent followed his exceptional performance as a crucial player in the two-match Test series against Bangladesh .
Although Bumrah captured 11 wickets and bowled a total of 49 overs throughout the series, matching Ashwin's total but with a far superior bowling average of only 12.82.
Bumrah's previous achievement, which he accomplished in February 2024 during the India-England Test series, when he initially rose to the top spot and also deposed Ashwin, is being repeated again. With this success, Bumrah has become the first fast bowler from India to rank highest on the Test. Kapil Dev was the best-ranked Indian pacer before Bumrah; he peaked at No. 2 between December 1979 and February 1980. Late 2010 also saw Zaheer Khan land at No. 3 in the rankings.
Ravichandran Ashwin scored a century and took 11 wickets, therefore displaying really good form throughout the series. Currently standing only one point behind Bumrah, he promises a tough environment as India gets ready for next series against Australia and New Zealand.
Bumrah is the bowler with the most Test wickets (2024), having taken 38 at a blistering strike rate of 14.42. Although Prabath Jayasiriya of Sri Lanka has the same wicket count, his strike rate is somewhat better.
Following the series, Bumrah indicated he wanted to take part in every Test match that remains scheduled for India this season. The squad is scheduled to play New Zealand in a three-match series before a demanding five-Test series against Australia under the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
