Ben Stokes played an incredible knock as England settled scores against arch-rivals Australia in the third Test of the ongoing Ashes series as the Joe Root-led side registered a nail-biting one-wicket win on Sunday. Ben Stokes had joined his skipper Joe Root just a few overs before stumps at Day 3 and after Root was dismissed, he held one end and anchored England's run-chase against the quality Australian bowling line-up. However, Ben Stokes also had a fair share of luck? Yes, you have heard that right as the southpaw was given a reprieve by umpire Joel Wilson when the match was hanging in the balance.
Joel Wilson gets trolled for umpiring blunder
It all happened when a beautiful delivery from Nathan Lyon completely deceived Ben Stokes as he attempted a glorious sweep shot and missed the ball completely and was struck on his pads. England needed two runs to win with one wicket left. The Australians were confident that they had got their man and appealed for the wicket. Nonetheless, Joel Wilson was not on the same page with the Aussies and ruled the decision in Stokes's favour. What added insult to injury was that when replays were shown, there were three reds and the Hawk-Eye suggested that Ben Stokes was plumb in front of the wicket. When Joel Wilson had ruled the decision against Australia, the reason why they did not review it is that they had no review left. In fact, just a few overs ago, the visitors had wasted their final review on number 11 batsman Jack Leach.
After the loss, Joel Wilson faced the wrath of the Australian fans.
Ben Stokes' century help England level the series
Ben Stokes played an outstanding knock which denied an Australian victory to keep the Ashes alive. After skipper Joe Root's dismissal, the onus was on Ben Stokes to handle the Australian bowling line up which he did in style. Ben Stokes scored an unbeaten 219-ball 135 as he hosts registered a famous win with one wicket left. The series is now level at 1-1 with two games to be played.
