Jofra Archer, England’s star bowler, joined Sportsmail as a new columnist and Former England captain, Nasser Hussain was in Auckland ahead of next week’s two-Test series against New Zealand to meet him.
Jofra Archer said in an interview with Hussain that cricket fans who fell back upon racial abuse should realise time had moved on and the world was a much more multicultural place. The 24-year-old Barbados-born bowler quickly rose to ranks and became a fan favourite since he became eligible to play for England earlier this year.
The England quick bowler benefited from England and Wales Cricket Board's reduction of the eligibility period from seven years to three so he did not have to wait till 2022. He quickly showed his value by bowling the crucial Super Over in the thrilling 2019 World Cup final victory over New Zealand.
Jofra Archer expressed his views on racism in Cricket & Football in England
It was in the fourth Test at Old Trafford in which Australia won to ensure they retained the Urn, Archer was racially abused by a couple of fans. He said that he was aware of what the guys were saying, something about his passport but he blanked them. He added that it was his captain Joe Root who told him later that those guys were ejected.
He went on to say it was the first time he’d seen someone get ejected from the ground because there were some abusive fans when they played Pakistan at Trent Bridge. Archer said that the world was changing as it was becoming more multicultural. A lot of people had accepted it for what it was.
He cited the example of the England cricket team saying there was huge diversity. It was the same with any football club in the world and added that people had to accept it.
