Team India may play the 1st Test against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy without its first-choice captain Rohit Sharma . The Indian skipper could stay back in India as his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, is pregnant and the due date is set to clash with the 1st Test, which is scheduled to begin on November 22, 2024. Considering the case of Sharma, India's batting great Sunil Gavaskar has suggested that given the circumstances the vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah should be given the baton to lead India in the entirety of the series.

Aaron Finch Disagrees With Sunil Gavaskar
Former Australia captain, Aaron Finch did not welcome the suggestion of Sunil Gavaskar and stated that India should stay put with Rohit Sharma as the captain. According to Finch, being there with your wife when she is about to deliver, comes under exceptions and one could sideline everything to experience the "beautiful moment".
"I disagree with Sunny on that totally. Rohit Sharma is the captain of the Indian cricket team. If you need to stay at home because your wife's going to have a baby… that's such a beautiful moment… and you take all the time that you need in that regard," Finch said on Around the Wicket podcast.

While Rohit Sharma's status for the 1st Test is unclear, should he opt out then Jasprit Bumrah will come to the front front as the captain. Rohit Sharma however will likely resume duties from the 2nd Test.

WTC Final Dreams Almost Over?
The loss has pushed India back on the WTC points table, putting the WTC final aspirations in extreme jeopardy. Team India's next assignment in Tests is the much-anticipated tour down under where Rohit Sharma's men will square off against Australia to lay claim on the Border Gavaskar Trophy. The equation for India to reach the WTC final has become daunting yet it remains the same, win four more matches and cement a spot for the marquee encounter once again. But beating Australia in Australia that too not once but four times in their backyard would be a long shot.
