Matthew Mott has been relieved of his duties as England's limited-overs head coach following a challenging period that saw the team relinquish two World Cup titles in the last 12 months. The decision comes as a significant shake-up within the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), reflecting the high stakes and expectations in international cricket.
Despite the setback, Jos Buttler will continue to lead the team as captain, while his former Somerset teammate, Marcus Trescothick, has been appointed as the interim head coach until the end of the summer.

The ECB has begun a formal process to find a permanent replacement for Matthew Mott, whose tenure lasted just over two years. During his time as head coach, Mott experienced mixed results in bilateral series but made an immediate impact by leading England to victory in the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022.

Kumar Sangakkara likely replacement for Matthew Mott
As the ECB searches for a new coach, former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara has emerged as the frontrunner for the position. Sangakkara's extensive playing experience and cricketing acumen have made him a highly sought-after candidate. His potential appointment has gained significant support, notably from Jos Buttler, who has emphasized the need for a coach with substantial playing experience.
Jos Buttler's endorsement carries weight, given his professional relationship with Kumar Sangakkara during their time together at the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The prospect of reuniting with his IPL boss in the England set-up has generated considerable interest. However, if Sangakkara were to accept the role of England's white-ball head coach, it could lead to his departure from Rajasthan Royals, where he has been a key figure.

Additionally, there have been rumors that the inaugural IPL champions, Rajasthan Royals, have approached Indian cricket legend Rahul Dravid to be their head coach for the IPL 2025 season. This move could indicate a broader restructuring within the franchise, depending on Sangakkara's decision regarding the England role.
