Pakistan Super League (PSL) team Islamabad United has appointed former captain Misbah-ul-Haq as the head coach. Misbah’s appointment came after the side sacked former Australian batsman Dean Jones as its coach. According to a leading media portal, Misbah’s appointment has led to objections from other franchises, who allege there will be a conflict of interest due to his multiple roles within Pakistani cricket. Misbah is also the head coach and chief selector for the Pakistani national team.

New season, new coach
A few days ago, Jones had announced that the Islamabad United had decided to go with a new coach this year via a video message on social media. Jones said that he was disappointed that despite winning two championships and qualifying for six of the eight playoffs, the team owners had chosen to replace him. The Australian ended his message by saying that he had a fantastic experience coaching the franchise and wished them the best.

Though Misbah’s appointment has not been confirmed officially, reports state that the Pakistan Cricket Board has given its consent to the former cricketer holding multiple positions within the organisation. Interestingly, PCB had agreed to form a policy against people holding various positions while associated with the board.

In 2018, PCB removed chief selector Inzamam ul Haq from the PSL player selection committee due to a potential conflict of interest. Inzamam was part of a talent hunt programme run by Lahore Qalandars, one of the franchises in PSL. According to the board, his dual role would have become a conflict of interest. Pakistan selector Tauseef Ahmed, who was also spin coach for Islamabad United, was also left out of the PSL draft committee.

According to sources, Misbah has an agreement with PCB, which allows him to work for any franchise, but without getting paid by the board. However, the franchise’s have objected to Misbah’s participation in the PSL selection process and demanded that he should be barred being involved with the PSL.
