In a dramatic turn of events on September 10, Pakistan granted two lifelines to India opener Shubman Gill in the much-anticipated Super 4 clash in Colombo. The first lifeline came on the very first ball Gill faced when Pakistan failed to capitalise on a potential wicket-taking opportunity. The second chance arrived in the eighth over, which was bowled by Naseem Shah.

Then, Gill, who was batting on 30, attempted an aggressive shot against Shaheen Afridi, only to edge the ball towards the slip region. Astonishingly, both fielders, Iftikhar Ahmed and Agha Salman, positioned at first and second slip, made no effort to take the catch, allowing the ball to sail to the boundary untouched. Gill went onto score 58, which included 10 boundaries.

Mohammad Kaif, who was commentating on the match for Star Sports in Hindi, could not contain his laughter and quipped about Pakistan's fielding performance. "Pakistan and their fielding (laughs)," Kaif said on air.

Prior to the rain interruption, India had been in a commanding position at 147 for 2 in 24.1 overs. The opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had set the stage with an impressive partnership of 121 runs, both notching up half-centuries at a remarkable run rate. Pakistan's bowlers, led by Shaheen Afridi, had initially struggled but managed to dismiss both openers and stage a comeback.

Unfortunately, heavy rain disrupted the match, forcing a postponement with an exciting conclusion in sight. Umpire inspections could not alter the fate of the game, and the future of this encounter remains uncertain, with further rain predicted.

If the match resumes, India may have to play three consecutive days, including their Super 4 fixture against Sri Lanka scheduled for September 12. The cricketing world awaits the outcome of this intriguing contest as weather conditions continue to influence the series.
