Morne Morkel To Join Forces With Gautam Gambhir

South Africa's Morne Morkel has officially taken over from Paras Mhambrey as Team India's bowling coach. In his inaugural press conference after succeeding Rahul Dravid, India's head coach Gambhir announced the appointments of Abhishek Nayar and Ryan Ten Doeschate as assistant coaches. Morkel's potential move to the Indian team had been a topic of speculation ever since BCCI secretary Jay Shah revealed Gambhir as Dravid's successor following a successful T20 World Cup campaign.

Morne Morkel's Coaching stints

At International Stage

Morkel, who coached Babar Azam's Pakistan team during the 2023 ODI World Cup, ended his contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) months before it was set to expire. After a disappointing ICC event in India, where his Pakistan team did not advance to the later stages of the World Cup, Gambhir reportedly recommended Morkel to the BCCI as a potential bowling coach for the Indian team following his own appointment.

In the IPL and other stints

Gambhir and Morkel led the elite coaching team for KL Rahul's Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, with Gambhir serving as the franchise mentor for two years. After Gambhir's departure, Morkel continued with LSG, working alongside head coach Justin Langer while Gambhir moved back to KKR for a title-winning season. Morkel's coaching experience also includes stints with Namibia, Durban's Super Giants, and the New Zealand women's team during the T20 World Cup in South Africa.
