The stage is set as the  Dream11 IPL 2020 gets underway on Saturday evening when last year's finalists as well as arch-rivals Mumbai and Chennai lock horns in the curtain-raiser that will be played at Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium. The action kicks off at 19:30 hrs IST and all the passionate cricket fans will be glued to their seats for the next 53 days. 
The 13th edition of the tournament was originally scheduled to kick off on March 29 but was temporarily suspended due to the global pandemic. Meanwhile, this edition of the tournament will be played in the UAE across three venues- Dubai, Sharjah, and, Abu Dhabi respectively.

Defending champions Mumbai to take on Chennai

Title-holders Mumbai will be looking to start on a confident note whereas Chennai will be eager to avenge last year's heartbreaking loss in the tournament decider. However, the three-time champions would be hoping to prove a point or two despite the unavailability of two of their prolific players- Suresh Raina, and, Harbhajan Singh who had backed out from the competition due to personal reasons and while they have their bases covered in the spin department, it remains to be seen who will be their number three batsman this time around. Veteran batsmen Shane Watson and, Ambati Rayudu would be expected to occupy that spot. 

The reigning champions on the other hand will be without the services of their premier pacer Lasith Malinga who also has backed out owing to personal reasons. The Sri Lankan icon is the leading wicket-taker in the tournament history. Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah will be expected to fill Malinga's shoes in his absence and he might be sharing the new ball with New Zealand speedster Trent Boult. Australian fast bowler James Pattinson has been roped in as the Lankan quickie's replacement.

MS Dhoni returns after 14 months

What really makes this curtain-raiser exciting is the fact that legendary cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be returning to competitive cricket for the first time in over 14 months. MS Dhoni was last seen in action during the heart-breaking World Cup 2019 semi-final against New Zealand at Manchester on July 10, 2019. He announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020. The 2011 World Cup-winning skipper will be back on the 22 yards when he walks out for the toss along with his former Indian team-mate and good friend Rohit Sharma on Saturday evening.
