New Zealand batting coach Craig McMillan bids goodbye to team days after World Cup, hails sportsmanship of the Kiwis

New Zealand's batting coach Craig McMillan penned an emotional message as his stint as the batting coach with the Kiwis came to an end after the World Cup 2019. The former New Zealand cricketer completed five years with the Black Caps as the batting coach and was a part of both the runner-up teams in the 2015 and 2019 World Cup finals. 

Taking to Twitter, McMillan posted an emotional message, he conveyed his pride in working closely with the Kiwis as he thanked the players and the support staff. He said that the Black Caps were a special group who continue to achieve at the highest level with humility and sportsmanship.

The 42-year-old said that he did not ask for an extension of his contract with the side, and in fact, he announced his decision in February. McMillan's decade long career as a player for the Kiwis included 55 Tests, 197 ODIs and eight T20Is. 

New Zealand lost out on winning the World Cup by a very small margin as England beat the Kiwis by the controversial boundary count rule after a tie in the Super Over in the finals of the 2019 World Cup at Lord's Cricket Grounds in London. The latter half of the match was marred with many controversial incidents including the four extra runs awarded to England all-rounder Ben Stokes after an overthrow from Martin Guptill deflected off the former's bat and ran away to the boundary. While many argued that the ball should have been declared dead, the Maryborne Cricket Club (MCC) has reportedly agreed to review the overthrow rules post the controversial final.
