'Next six months fraught with danger' - England cricket CEO on virus fallout

The head of English cricket, Tom Harrison, has warned the next six months are "fraught with danger" due to ongoing coronavirus restrictions affecting all sport in the UK.

The England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive, speaking at the Leaders in Sport online forum on Tuesday, painted a gloomy outlook for English cricket which was unable to host any fans across summer series against the West Indies, Pakistan, Ireland and Australia and now faces a "pretty bleak winter" without lucrative conferencing revenues at their headquarters, Lord's.

Despite securing much-needed broadcast revenue by being the first country to host international cricket after the global coronavirus lockdown, the organisation faces further pressure due to the UK Government pausing the return of spectators to sports venues, which had been due to take place from October 1 on a socially-distanced basis.

The UK is currently averaging over 10,000 new Covid-19 infections per day and has a quarter of its population living under tighter local coronavirus restrictions.
