OTD: Kane Williamson scored maiden Test century on debut against India

While making his Test debut in 2010, Kane Williamson helped the New Zealand team to draw a tight encounter with India at Ahmedabad. Let us take a look back.

On this day, New Zealand ace Kane Williamson scored his maiden Test century in 2010. Williamson, who currently captains New Zealand, has risen through the ranks over the years and is currently, one of the best cricketing players in the world. It was under him that the New Zealand team finished second in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup and was also the Player of the Tournament.

Kane Williamson: Vital innings on debut

After making his ODI debut earlier in the same year, twenty-year-old Williamson made his Test debut against India at Ahmedabad in the match which started on November 4. After Indian skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat, the Indians posted a remarkable 487 in their first innings, owing to centuries from Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid. New Zealand could have lost their way in the first innings but Kane Williamson along with Jesse Ryder stitched a 194-run partnership as both men scored hundreds. Williamson became the eighth New Zealand player to score a hundred on his Test debut.

New Zealand finished the first innings at 459 and a five-wicket haul by Chris Martin in the second innings allowed India to score only 266. Surprisingly, India's saving grace was Harbhajan Singh who scored 115. New Zealand needed 295 to win and had only 10 overs to play on the final day. They played through, ending at 22/1 and drawing the match.

Kane Williamson: One of the world's most promising talents

Ever since this match where he debuted in Tests, it has been an upward journey for Kane Williamson who eventually became New Zealand's skipper in 2016 when he led the team at the World T20. Williamson, in 2019, led the team to the 2019 50-over World Cup final which the team almost won. He also replaced David Warner as the Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper in 2018 and took them to the IPL finals. Williamson currently has over 13,000 International runs.
