ENG vs AUS: Ricky Ponting hit by a grape ahead of the 5th Test

Ricky Ponting had an unexpected encounter during his live commentary on Sky Sports on Day 1 of the fifth Ashes Test at the Oval. “I have just been hit by grapes. I wouldn’t mind finding out who were those actually”

The segment's host, Ian Ward, attempted to make light of the situation, but Ponting was not amused. He voiced his displeasure and gave the English fans a severe glare. Furthermore, the former Australian captain indicated that he would not let the incident go unreported and was keen to find the perpetrators of the grape attack.

Ricky Ponting Dismisses Joe Root's Proposal for Test Cricket Law Changes

Before the fifth Ashes Test on July 27, tensions grew as a result of Ricky Ponting's forceful response to English batsman Joe Root's desire for changes to the rules governing Test cricket. Root highlighted his wish to extend match hours in England after the fourth Test in Manchester was postponed due to inclement weather, citing the late sunset in the summer. Ponting adamantly maintained that it is not possible to arbitrarily change the rules of the game.

Australia now leads the Ashes series 2-1, and England had a chance to tie it in the fifth Test. Heavy rains hindered their efforts despite their best efforts, and the game ended in a tie.

Australia displayed a commanding performance in the opening stages of the fifth Test at the Oval, evoking memories of their triumph over India in the World Test Championship (WTC) final the month before. Only six players managed to score in double digits for England, which had a dramatic collapse in their batting order.

England was able to record a total of 283 runs in the first innings due to Harry Brook's tenacious effort of 85 runs. Australia's batting innings got off to a bad start as David Warner left after reaching 24 runs. Australia had 61 runs at the conclusion of the day's play, with Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne both standing tall and unbeaten at the crease.
