Indian bowler Mohammed Shami became the first pacer to take a five-wicket haul in the second innings of the opposition team’s batting since 1996 on Sunday. This happened on the final day of the first Test match between India and South Africa. This feat of a five-wicket haul was achieved by a pacer after Proteas' Lance Klusener in 1996 took wickets in the fourth innings of a Test in India. Shami's figures are the sixth-best by any pacer in the fourth innings of a Test in India.

Recorded Achievements

Shami finished with bowling figures of 5/35 in the first test match against the Proteas. From his five wickets, Shami got four bowled dismissals. In the recently concluded series against West Indies, Jasprit Bumrah had become the first bowler to record four bowled dismissals. Apart from this, the feat has been achieved by Lance Kluserner at 8/64 and Javagal Srinath at 6/21 in 1996. Also, it was achieved by West Indies' Vanburn Holder at 6/39 in 1974, Madan Lal in 1981 and Karsan Ghavri in 1977. These are the only pacers in history to procure this accomplishment.
