With the retirement of Rohit Sharma from T20 Internationals following India's triumphant campaign at the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean, the spotlight now turns to his successor. Among the leading contenders for the coveted role of India's T20I skipper is Suryakumar Yadav

Known for his aggressive batting and strategic acumen, Suryakumar Yadav's extensive captaincy experience across various age groups and formats makes him a strong candidate. Hardik Pandya, the vice-captain during the recent T20 World Cup, is also in the fray, having previously led India in T20Is on multiple occasions.

Early Captaincy Journey

Suryakumar Yadav's leadership journey began with the Mumbai Under-19 team during the 2009/10 Cooch Behar Trophy. He then progressed to captain the Under-22 side in the CK Nayudu Tournament over the next two seasons.

Significant Milestones

In 2012, Suryakumar Yadav captained Mumbai A in a warm-up game against the visiting England team ahead of their Test series in India. The following year, he led the Indian team in the Emerging Teams Asia Cup, guiding them to the title with a commanding nine-wicket victory over a Pakistan team.

Transition to Senior Captaincy

Suryakumar Yadav's first major foray into senior domestic cricket captaincy came in 2014 when he led Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His leadership credentials were further solidified in 2015 when he was appointed the captain of the prestigious Ranji Trophy team.

Although his tenure saw limited opportunities, leading just one Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh from 2015 to 2019, his appointment as the skipper for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and then the Ranji Trophy showcased the faith the selectors had in his leadership abilities.
