After taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series against Sri Lanka, England endured a sour end in the bilateral contest as the visitors outplayed the hosts in the third and final Test to take home a consolation victory. England had a fair lead of 62 runs after the first innings but owing to some extraordinary bowling from Lahiru Kumara and Vishwa Fernando the tables turned. Pathum Nissanka took the rest of the onus and courtesy of a century in the 4th innings he took his side past the finish line. Sri Lanka chased down the total of 219 runs with eight wickets in hand and hence scripted a famous victory at The Oval.

Michael Vaughan Throws Flak on England Team Following Loss vs Sri Lanka in 3rd Test

Former England captain, Michael Vaughan, who is known to present his views on the results and happenings in cricket, threw flak at the England side for the approach they adopted against Sri Lanka in the 3rd Test. According to Vaughan, England did not play as per the situation and did not give its opponent the due respect and hence paid the price.

“I felt that they disrespected Test cricket, and disrespected Sri Lanka in the third Test by being over-aggressive with both bat and in their field placings," Vaughan wrote in The Telegraph.

Vaughan also highlighted an observation about the England team and has had precedents to state that the team has a habit of becoming complacent.

“England have made a bit of a habit of becoming a bit complacent after a good period - I think of the start of the Ashes, or earlier this year in Rajkot - and I hope it serves as a wake-up call for the tougher Tests that lie in wait in 2025,” he said.
