In a thrilling clash at the 2024 Major League Cricket (MLC), Washington Freedom secured their third consecutive victory by defeating the Los Angeles Knight Riders by eight wickets. Choosing to bowl first, Washington bowled out Los Angeles for a modest 129, with standout performances from Saurabh Netravalkar, who took four wickets, and Glenn Maxwell, who claimed three. 

Washington then chased down the target in just 16 overs, thanks to a commanding 79-run opening partnership between Travis Head and Steve Smith. However, an unusual incident during the match has taken social media by storm.

Andre Russell's power shatters Travis Head's bat

In the second over of Washington Freedom's innings, Andre Russell delivered a fierce short-pitched ball that shattered Travis Head's bat. The ball struck the upper part of the bat, sending splinters flying towards mid-wicket. The force of the bat's front part caused the handle to fly off as well, leaving Head astonished.

WSF vs LAKR, MLC 2024

The match itself was a showcase of Washington Freedom's dominance. Openers Travis Head and Steve Smith launched an aggressive assault from the start, ensuring a brisk powerplay. By the end of six overs, Washington was cruising at 61/0. 

Head, displaying his trademark power-hitting, reached his half-century off just 27 balls, including six towering sixes. The partnership was eventually broken in the ninth over when Shadley van Schalkwyk dismissed the Australian opener for 54.

Steve Smith continued to anchor the innings, with Rachin Ravindra contributing 11 runs before falling to Spencer Johnson's pace and bounce in the 13th over. With the score at 109/2, Andries Gous joined Smith, and the duo guided Washington to victory, finishing at 130/2 in just 16 overs.

Glenn Maxwell was named the player of the match for picking up three wickets to his name.
