Decision Review System (DRS) was introduced to minimize  margin of error in decision making by umpire. However, it has also led to a lot of bewilderment among viewers over debatable umpire’s call. Recently, Virat Kohli DRS controversy had created a lot of buzz after England captain Joe Root was reprieved off R Ashwin's bowling during second India vs England Test when he was trapped dead in front of wicket.

Ricky Ponting seeks clarity in controversial 'Umpire's Call'

Recently, an MCC conference meeting was held which included Ricky Ponting, Shane Warne among or table members. During meeting, much-debated 'Umpire's call' issue was discussed and re remains a strong possibility of controversial rule being cancelled in favour of a straight out or t out decision. 

According to a statement, MCC committee said that some members felt (Umpire’s Call) was confusing to watching public, particularly when same ball could eir be Out or t out depending on on-field umpire’s original decision. It added that members felt it would be simpler if original decision was disregarded on review and that re was a simple Out or t out, with Umpire’s Call.

However, supporters of Umpire's call argued that Umpire’s Call helps to retain a human element in decision-making process, and it also takes into account benefit of doubt that has existed in umpires’ decisions for many years. views of committee members will be passed to ICC later this year. Besides Umpire's Call issue, matters like saliva on ball, short-pitched bowling,  future of ICC World Test Championship,  use of host-country umpires in Test cricket, and women’s cricket were also discussed during meeting.

For unversed, Kohli DRS controversy erupted when Indian skipper was involved in an angry exchange with umpire Nitin Men on Day 3 of India vs England 2nd Test. It all happened during final over of day when Men adjudged England skipper Joe Root t out. Kohli used DRS and decision favoured Root because of umpire's call.

Englishman lived to see ar day as umpire had originally adjudged him t out. As soon as third umpire gave  verdict, an infuriated Kohli walked down to Men and expressed his displeasure over decision. dynamic batsman was seething as he was seen engd in a furious chat with umpire.

Cricketing pundits also expressed ir shock over bizarre decision. Former England batsman Nick Knight was left astonished by decision. Former Australian batsman Mark Waugh also tweeted his surprise as he wrote, "That’s plumpest LBW I’ve ever seen given t out by DRS." With so much outcry surrounding rule, it will be interesting to see what ICC decides to do with Umpire's Call.

Meanwhile, India vs England 3rd Test will commence on February 24 at Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad.  Ahmedabad Test is one of most-anticipated games of India's home season, primarily for two reasons. It will t only be India's annual pink-ball Test but also  first game to be played at newly-constructed world's largest cricket stadium at Motera in Ahmedabad.
