Indian women's team creates history in Asian Games 2023

The Indian women's team won the Asian Games gold medal with a 19-run victory over the previously undefeated Sri Lankan squad. India's decision to sit out of the two previous Asian Games that featured cricket makes their win all the more meaningful.

India's run to the gold medal began with a spectacular batting performance. They won the toss and elected to bat first, scoring 116-7 off of their 20 allotted overs. Smriti Mandhana scored 46 runs, and Jemimah Rodrigues added 42 more, forming a crucial partnership that helped set a respectable mark for Sri Lanka to chase.

A brilliant bowling session from right-arm seamer Titas Sadhu helped reduce Sri Lanka to 14-3 in the fifth over of their chase, a terrible start. The three wickets Sadhu took for only six runs in her allotted overs put Sri Lanka in a precarious position early in the game.

Sri Lanka's chase was a failure despite the recent victories they've had. Hasini Perera showed grit at the batting table with a swift 25 runs, but the team kept losing wickets. Nilakshi de Silva's dismissal left Sri Lanka requiring an improbable 39 runs in just 23 balls after she had already contributed a valiant 23. They were unable to score more than five runs in the final over, which gave India the victory.
