Australia was denied a hat-trick win after gaining impressive wins over Afghanistan and West Indies by India who finally avenged their loss in the 1999 World Cup against the Aussies at the same venue. At the start of the match, India chose to bat, playing as per its strategy after winning the toss.

In head-to-head World Cup confrontations, Australia is way ahead of India with an 8-3 victory margin in 11 games. Australia had beaten India in the finals of the 2003 edition comprehensively. Meanwhile, India had ended Australia's 12-year long World Cup reign in 2011 to become the eventual champions. But in 2015, the Aussies turned the tables on the 'Men In Blue' before re-establishing their supremacy in World Cricket once again. With this win, second-ranked India has once again turned the tables on cricket supremacy over fifth-ranked Australia.
