Former cricketers and fans were disgruntled with the manner in which the winner was decided for the finals of the World Cup on July 14 at Lord's in London. England clinched their maiden World Cup title after beating New Zealand by a boundary count-back after the game went into a last-over thriller followed by a super over which also was tied.
According to the ICC, if the game is tied in the Super over, then the team that has scored more number of boundaries will be declared the winner and hence England, who had scored 24 boundaries, were declared the title-holders against New Zealand's 16 boundaries.
Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh lashed out at the ICC for the bizarre rule. Taking to Twitter, the left-handed all-rounder said that he disagreed with the boundary count rule. With a tinge of disappointment that can be sensed from his words, Yuvraj congratulated the England team for their victory and applauded the spirit of the Kiwis, who fought until the very last ball.

Former Indian batsman Mohammad Kaif also took to Twitter to express his disagreement with the boundary count rule. Kaif said that it was difficult for him to digest the rule and that a sudden death-continuous super over would have been a better solution. He lashed out at the ICC for using the boundary count rule at such a crucial juncture and said that two teams sharing a trophy was better than deciding the winner on the basis of the number of boundaries hit.
