Afghanistan's dream run in the T20 World Cup 2024 saw a cruel conclusion at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on Wednesday (Thursday morning in India). In a much-anticipated semi-final, Afghanistan were outclassed by South Africa in all departments, losing the game by 9 wickets. Proteas' pace battery of Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Anrich Nortje didn't give Afghanistan batters any time to settle and inflicted a devastating collapse. As the hopes vanished, the Afghanistan team's captain Rashid Khan became emotional and apparently could not hold back tears from rolling out.

It is often said that it is just a game, but whenever hard work does not reap ideal results and dreams shatter, the pain of losing becomes heavy then the emotions tend to get the better of even the strongest individuals. It looked like destiny had written a beautiful script for Afghanistan and the team could go all the way to the final and perhaps even lift the eminent T20 World Cup trophy. However, it wasn't meant to be as the team failed miserably on the day when they needed to produce its best.
In the biggest match of their cricketing existence, Afghanistan posted its lowest-ever T20I total on the board. The match was over at the halfway mark as a target of 57 runs wouldn't have produced an iota of chance against South Africa. They lost the match by 9 wickets and the burden of the loss could be perceived through the distraught image of Rashid Khan, which has spread all over the internet.

While their journey has ended at the semi-final stage, they have a lot to cherish over the way things transpired in the last two weeks for them. A new beginning is set to unfold and Afghanistan cricket is what it seems is a rising sun.
