New Zealand were left stunned in their first game at the T20 World Cup 2024 as a spirited Afghanistan side led by Rashid Khan dismantled them at the total of only 75 runs to pull off another excellent upset in the tournament.

Kane Williamson and his Black Caps were bowling first and they limited Afghanistan to 159 runs on a tricky pitch at Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana. Chasing 160, the New Zealand batting simply collapsed against the left arm pace of Fazalhaq Farooki and the web spun by Rashid Khan as the Kiwis bundled at an embarrassing total of 75 runs.

Kane Williamson however did say that he was confident in his team to move on quickly from the result as they know they have a huge challenge ahead and the tournament is short.

“We know we have a challenge coming up in West Indies, but it’s about us being better. You’re dealt the cards you are dealt and the boys have been working hard for this game, but we will move on quickly because the tournament is short,” concluded the Kiwi skipper.

Kane Williamson and New Zealand now find themselves in a tricky spot as they sit at the bottom of Group C with a horrible net run rate of -4.200. Their next game is against the host nation of West Indies 12th June and it becomes a must win clash for them. If they win against West Indies then they will be masters of their own destiny as they can go ahead in their final two group games against associate nations of Papua New Guinea and Uganda to try and improve their net run rate.
