World Test Championship 2025: England Can Still Qualify For WTC Final, But Their Fate Rests On BGT
England are currently touring Pakistan for a three-match Test series. England have started the series strongly as they clinched the first Test in Multan
WTC 2025 Final: Ben Stokes' England have always been credited for revamping the longest format of the game, Test cricket. After England's debacle in the away Ashes which was played in 2021, their red ball game needed to change and they did it in some style. Under Brendon McCullum as the Head Coach, England adapted a new aggressive and all-out template of playing Test cricket and it benefited them a lot. But have England been able to deliver according to their reputation? Absolutely not.
England Still Fancy A Berth in WTC 2025 Final
In their home conditions, England have been absolutely ruthless and haven't let anybody dominate them. But their problems began when they faced India in India, earlier this year. The India vs England series was highly awaited due to England's change in approach of perceiving Test cricket, but their hopes took a massive hit as India defeated them 4-1.
Ben Stokes' England have played 18 games so far in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle. Now, there has been a lot of hue and cry about how they have dominated the purest format of the game, but the results don't show it. Stokes and Co. have only won 10 games and have lost 8. Now England have only four Test matches left and they are all away games. England have two Test matches to be played against Pakistan and two to be played against New Zealand.
The English team has a herculean task ahead of them and they need to win the remaining four games. A draw wouldn't help England and they need to be on the right side of things. Much to England's misfortunes, even if they end up winning, all their remaining games, it wouldn't guarantee them a place in the WTC Finals as their fate rests upon the outcomes of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy
India vs Australia: The Likely Fixture For WTC 2025 Final
India and Australia are currently the top favourites to play the WTC 2025 Final. As things stand now, the repeat of the WTC 2023 Final looks highly possible. India and Australia are the two top teams in the latest standings and it will take some herculean effort from the other seven teams to challenge them for a berth in the finals.
India need 3 wins from their remaining games to qualify for the finals, whereas Australia need four wins to qualify for the summit clash. The outcome of the India vs Australia Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be a factor in deciding England's qualification, but firstly, they'll have to win all their remaining games.
