Yuvraj Singh tweets about controversial Vijay Hazare Trophy rain rule

Former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh on Tuesday expressed his disappointment over the rules of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019. According to the rules, if the game is abandoned due to bad weather, the team with more wins in the group stage advances to the next round. The catch here is, teams in group B played 8 games while teams in Group C played 9 games. This means, even if teams in group B win all their games, they’ll not be favoured if their opponent from Group C has won all their set of games.

Yuvraj Singh: Are domestic competitions not important?

Yuvraj took to Twitter to express his disappointment after Punjab were knocked out in the quarter-finals against Tamil Nadu after the match got abandoned due to rain in Bengaluru. It bears noting that Yuvraj hails from Punjab itself and had led the team in domestic cricket over the years. Punjab were in control of the game, after having restricted Tamil Nadu to 174 in a game reduced to 39 overs per side. Punjab had mustered 52/2 in 12.2 overs before the game was called off due to rains. Yuvraj Singh criticized the BCCI for not having reserve days for the domestic tournament.

Mandeep Singh, Shreyas Iyer express their disappointment

Punjab captain Mandeep Singh expressed his anguish as well over the result and said that it is a bad rule and devastating for his team to bow out in this manner. He further added that any team would prefer to play in Group C and D because they get to play more games, which can further help in situations like this. In a similar situation, Mumbai got knocked out after their game against Chhattisgarh got washed out. Mumbai were cruising at 95/0 chasing 191 when rain halted the proceedings. Iyer further added that although the BCCI had informed them about the rules before the tournament, it is 'unfair' on the team after having such a good run in the competition

Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019 semi-finals

Chhattisgarh play Karnataka in the first semi-final, while Tamil Nadu will face Gujarat in the second semi-final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019. Both matches are set to be played at Alur in Bengaluru, where rains have been a constant threat to the results. With rain affecting the games extensively, BCCI will have to think about tinkering the rules to keep all parties happy.
