FIDE Rating: Latest World Chess Rankings after Praggnanandhaa vs Magnus Carlsen final

After an exceptional performance in the FIDE Chess World Cup 2023, R Praggnanandhaa has scaled significantly on the ranking table. Carlsen is still number 1.

India's R Praggnanandhaa finished the FIDE Chess World Cup 2023 campaign as a runner-up. In the final of the tournament, the 18-year-old lost to the 5-time World Champion and current world number 1, Magnus Carlsen. With the win, Carlsen attained the only title that was missing from his wide collection.

Huge up for R Praggnanandhaa and India

While Pragg had to bite the bitter pill of defeat in the summit clash, overall the competition proved to be a breakthrough for him and India. He reached the final and thereby made it to the Candidates Tournament, where no Indian other than Viswanathan Anand has ever entered. It should be noted that the Candidates Tournament which will be held next year will feature 8 candidates and among them, whoever will win will go on to challenge Ding Liren for the World Championship. So, Pragg scripted history even if the trophy remained elusive.

Praggnanandhaa is the new World number 20

His advancement in the circuit was observed throughout the nation and a greater interest in Chess suddenly sparked. Praggnanandhaa's journey in the World Cup was nothing short of a magnificent one, he defeated World number 3, and World 2 in the form of Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura in the tournament, thus, by virtue of that an improvement in ranking was bound to happen.

He came in the tournament as world number 29 and after his exploits, his FIDE ranking has improved by 9 positions. Pragg is now the new number 20 in the classical category and has an ELO rating of career-high 2727.2. As for Magnus Carlsen, he remains at number 1, whereas the World Champion Ding Liren is number 4 in the world.
