Arsene Wenger has been named FIFA's chief of global football development

Arsene Wenger has been confirmed as FIFA's chief of global football development. Wenger, who spent 22 years in charge of Arsenal until 2018, had been strongly linked with the vacant managerial position at Bayern Munich in recent weeks, but instead, he will take up a new position with the global governing body.

Arsene Wenger's new job with FIFA

FIFA has announced Arsene Wenger as their Chief of Global Football Development. The illustrious French manager was welcomed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to the world football governing body’s headquarters in Zurich.

Arsene Wenger's chief responsibility will be overseeing the growth and development of the sport for both men and women around the world. He will also be the leading authority on technical matters, both as a member of the Football and Technical Advisory Panels and as the chairman of the FIFA Technical Study Group. Wenger’s role will include a particular focus on coach education, tailored to encourage former professional players to enter management. The programme is in its inception phase and aims to support retired players through the post-career transition and bridge the gap between managerial and technical positions in football.

Arsene Wenger: A distinguished career

Known as Le Professeur, Wenger has spent his whole career in football. After hanging up his boots in 1981, Wenger found his true calling in football management. He enjoyed a successful stint with AS Monaco followed by Nagoya Grampus Eight in Japan, and finally, with Arsenal he went on to become one of the longest-serving managers in English top-flight history, winning the Premier League title three times. He is also a highly respected TV match analyst.

On his new appointment, Arsene Wenger expressed his delight in being associated with FIFA. He admitted it is indeed an important challenge and is determined to work with FIFA to develop the game and its many different components.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino acknowledged Wenger's profound passion for the game and admired him for his strategic vision, competence and dedication to the sport. He insisted that their main purpose remains to bring 'FIFA back to football and football back to FIFA.'
