Ballon d'Or: Lionel Messi ahead of Lewandowski, Ronaldo and Benzeman in recent poll

The race for Ballon d'Or has gained momentum with Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi looking clear favourite to win the coveted prize.

race for Ballon d'Or has gained momentum with Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi looking clear favourite to win coveted prize. According to latest poll conducted by MARCA, Messi emerged as top contender for award with 34 percent of pollees voting in his favour. Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and Bayern Munich player Robert Lewandowski are second and third on list with 26 percent and 11 percent votes in ir favour, respectively.

Messi is still looking in great form despite t being on his side. Messi has scored a total of 40 goals in 2021, including 14 assists in 48 appearances for Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and his national side Argentina. Messi has won two trophies this year to make his case for Ballon d'Or even stronger. Messi won Copa del Rey with Barcelona and Copa America with Argentina, his first for national team.

In 2019, Messi won his record sixth Ballon d'Or title 10 years after he won his first. Messi surpassed Cristia Ronaldo to become player with most golden shoes as he was earlier tied with Portuguese striker at 5.
