‘I have a point to prove’: Bruno Fernandes on captaincy duties at Manchester United

Portuguese star Bruno Fernandes spoke before the match against Real Madrid and pointed an important message to some of his club teammates. On being asked if the club’s newcomer Mason Mount is under any type of pressure, Bruno went on to name six other players who have a point to prove. It is worth noting that Mason Mount was roped in by Manchester United after a whopping £55 million move.

As quoted by Daily Mirror, the Man Utd captain said, “I have a point to prove. So does Licha [Martinez], Casemiro, Rapha [Varane], Andre [Onana], Harry [Maguire], Victor [Lindelof]. It's not about him [Mount]. He doesn't have to prove anything more than anyone else."

Further speaking about the expectations from Mount, Fernandes added, “He has goals and assists in him. He can create chances, so we are expecting a lot from him. But he's aware of that. He's at a big club and he knows the expectations on him will be big." Manchester United finished third in the Premier League last season, behind champions Manchester City and Arsenal. However, they made a giant leap from the season before and ended up winning the Carabao Cup. They also reached the final of the FA Cup, which was won by City.

However, their struggle in away venues against big team was largely exposed in the 2022-23 season. Their biggest loss came against Liverpool, where they ended up losing by 7-0. In order to bolster their side ahead of the upcoming season, United boss Erik ten Hag made key changes to the squad, including the signing of Andre Onana from Inter Milan as the no. 1 goalkeeper, alongside signing Mount from Chelsea to strengthen their midfield.
