Carabao Cup 2019/20: Chelsea beat Grimsby Town, will face United next

The third round of the Carabao Cup began on 25 September with multiple Premier League teams entering the tournament. Chelsea hosted League Two side Grimsby Town at the Stamford Bridge in front of 40,000 fans. In what became a goal-fest, Chelsea destroyed the Grimsby defence by scoring 7 goals against the side. Chelsea will now face Manchester United in Round 4 of the Carabao Cup.

Early Dominance

The starting 11 for Chelsea featured six youth players. Frank Lampard's side established early dominance as Ross Barkley got a goal from the penalty area in just the fourth minute. The Chelsea attack wasted no time as Reece James targeted Michy Batshuayi who then scored a close-range goal off the assist. This was Batshuayi's first goal for Chelsea since January 2018.10 minutes later, a long kick made its way to Grimsby's Matt Green, who got a goal back for Grimsby. At the stroke of half time, captain Pedro successfully converted from the spot to restore Chelsea's lead. By the end of half time, the scoreline read 2-1.

The second half was fairly one-sided as Chelsea only proceeded to add salt to the Grimsby wounds who were virtually out of attackers. Reece James assisted Kurt Zouma for another goal in the 56th minute, widening the Chelsea lead to 3 goals. In the 82nd minute, Reece James was outside the penalty area when the ball made its way to him. James wasted no time in taking a shot that went through the defenders and James McKeown's gloves to take Chelsea to five. Batshuayi got his second goal of the match as he snuck one in while the clock read 86 minutes. The last goal came in the 89th minute off Callum Hudson-Odoi's boot. The match ended 7-1 in favour of Chelsea.

Up Next, Manchester United

This was Lampard's first win at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea boss. He criticised Hudson-Odoi for disregarding instructions in the first half. This was the first time Chelsea scored 7 goals in a League Cup game since 1960. Chelsea dominated the match with 24 shots, while Grimsby only took 7 shots. Chelsea will be facing Manchester United in their next Carabao Cup encounter.
