Missed chances in the first half
The first half did not have much for both teams but they did have their moments. Mason Greenwood crossed the ball to Paul Pogba who attempted a header only for the ball to go over the post. No real chances came for either team in the first 45 minutes as it ended with both sides being at 0-0.

The second half was where the sides finally broke free. In a brilliant play, Rochdale infiltrated United's area and with some precise passing beat Sergio Romero to give Callum Camps the possession. Camps took a shot, which seemed like a certain goal, but was cleared at the goal line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka. United opened the scoring when Jesse Lingard nudged the ball to Mason Greenwood inside the Rochdale area who then dribbled through the defence and scored the opener. Within minutes,16-year-old Luke Matheson, the right-back for Rochdale, then took a kick of an assist in the 76th-minute to beat Romero's gloves and equalise the match. Matheson celebrated wildly as Rochdale could fathom an upset. Both teams reached full-time at 1-1. In the penalty shootout, Roachdale missed two opportunities while United scored a perfect five with the final kick coming from Daniel James.
