Champions League: Chelsea vs Ajax preview
With Maurizio Sarri departing for Juventus in the summer, Chelsea's managerial hot seat was left vacant, just like their transfer window ambitions. A number of high-profile names were thrown up as Sarri's replacement, but the Blues eventually turned to club legend, Frank Lampard. With a transfer ban effected on the Blues and a host of loanees slated to return, Frank Lampard had a tough job on his hands. However, the former Derby County manager has more than stepped up to the challenge.
Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori all plied their trade in the Championship last season, but so far, the youngsters have proven that they belong in the top tier of English football. Christian Pulisic has also hit a purple patch after a slow start to the season. Jorginho labelled as Sarri's favourite by the Blues fans, looked likely to struggle to adapt to Frank Lampard's style of play. However, the Italian metronome provided a pin-point assist for Tammy Abraham's goal against Watford in their last Premier League outing.
Ajax, on the other hand, have hit top form in the Eredivisie this season. 10 wins and two draws in the Dutch league means that Ajax sit comfortably on top of the Eredivisie table after 12 games so far. Ajax saw some key players depart for greener pastures in the summer, with Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong and Kasper Dolberg departing the Dutch giants. However, Ajax are no strangers to shedding their skin and arriving with a fresh new look after a summer of upheaval. David Neres and Hakim Ziyech have stepped up for Ajax this season, with new signing Quincy Promes living up to his name and showing bundles of promise since his debut. Meanwhile, Hakim Ziyech has been directly involved in 83 games since his debut for the Dutch giants, which means the Chelsea defence will have to be wary of the Moroccan playmaker.
