English Premier League giants Liverpool and Chelsea will go head-to-head at the latter's home ground in Stamford Bridge on Sunday, September 22. In the 183 matches that the heavyweights have played against each other, Liverpool has maintained its dominance over the men in blue with 79 wins. In contrast, Frank Lampard's men have won 63 matches while managing to draw the rest. While football fans wait eagerly for the clash of these titans, here are three historical moments that define Liverpool-Chelsea rivalry.
Ghost Goal
The semi-final of the 2004-05 UEFA Champions League between the premier clubs, is a historic moment in their rivalry. The match is where the term 'ghost goal' originated. The story behind it is that the game was won by a single goal scored by Luis Garcia, awarded by the referee Lubos Michel. However, television replays of the goal remained inconclusive of whether the ball had crossed the line. After the match, the then Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho dubbed the goal a 'ghost goal.'
Later on, Michel acknowledged that he made the decision after his assistant referee indicated that the ball had crossed over the line. Experts have since then concluded that the referee, indeed, made the right call. While Chelsea lost that match 1-0 to Liverpool, the world of football gained the terms 'ghost goal' and 'phantom goal' which have since then become popular at both -- club and international level.
Gerrard's misfortune
The former English captain Steven Gerrard is a legend among the Liverpool fans. His achievements at the club are something that inspires most footballers. However, an error in judgment on his part that cost his club the match against Chelsea mars his legacy. In 2014, Gerrard did not control a pass by his fellow teammate Mamadou Sakho well and he slipped in his effort to correct the error. Chelsea's Demba Ba cashed in on Gerrard's misfortune, scoring a goal. This error on Gerrard's part led to a 2 - 0 win for Chelsea which dashed any hopes Liverpool had of winning the title that season.
Penalty shootout
The UEFA Super Cup held this year in Istanbul featured - Liverpool, the winner of the 2018-19 UEFA Champions' League and Chelsea who won the 2018-19 UEFA Europa League. Both sides went toe-to-toe with the match ending in a penalty shoot-out
Chelsea took an early lead in the match when a pass from Christian Pulisic was converted into a goal by Oliver Giroud. It took Liverpool 48 minutes to even the score with a close-range goal by Sadio Mane. In the 95th minute, Liverpool saw themselves with the upper hand when Mane scored his second goal in the match. But six minutes later, Chelsea was awarded a penalty which Jorginho converted into a goal - leaving the match at 2-2 after the extra time. It all came down to the penalty shoot-out (5-4) where Tammy Abraham saw his low shot saved by Adrian and Liverpool walked away with a win.
