Everton vs Tottenham: Five talking points from 1-1 draw on Matchday 11

Everton played hosts to Tottenham Hotspur on Matchday 11 of the Premier League. Two points separated the sides before and after the fixture. Tottenham took the led through a goal from Dele Alli. However, substitute Cenk Tosun equalised late on for the hosts. The fixture was overshadowed by Andre Gomes' horrific injury, after a challenge from Heung-min Son. Here are five talking points from the game.

1. Everton are in the doldrums

Everton were the fifth-highest spenders in the summer transfer window. With such a heavy investment, Everton looked well primed to launch an assault for the European places this season. However, after just three wins in 11 Premier League games so far, Marco Silva's side are now 17th on the Premier League table, just three points above 18th-placed Southampton. 

2. Christian Eriksen's rusty showing

Christian Eriksen seemed to have been brought out of his Ozil-esque exile in the last few weeks. In what was a rare start for the Danish playmaker this season, Eriksen once again failed to impress Mauricio Pochettino. Eriksen attempted zero take-ons during the game and also failed to create a single chance for Spurs all game. He also lost possession a total of 16 times during the course of the game and picked up a yellow card. Not a good showing for the Dane.

3. Tottenham's Merseyside woes

This was the first time in years that Tottenham played back to back Premier League games on Merseyside. Having taken an early lead in their visit to Anfield last week, Tottenham succumbed to a 2-1 loss, courtesy of goals from Liverpool's Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah. The draw against Everton means that Tottenham have now failed to secure a Premier League win in their last four outings. Their away form will also be worrisome for Mauricio Pochettino, as Tottenham are now placed in the bottom half of the table.

4. VAR makes an appearance

Heung-min Son was initially shown a yellow card for his late challenge on Andre Gomes. While Gomes did suffer a horrific ankle injury after the challenge, that wasn't completely down to the foul from Son. Gomes appeared to collide into Serge Aurier, before landing awkwardly on his ankle, which led to the injury. However, after intervention from VAR, referee Martin Atkinson was forced to issue a red card to Son. Mauricio Pochettino appeared to disagree with the decision, and also went on to say that the club may appeal the red card in the next couple of days. 

5. Stoppage time drama in the Premier League

Matchday 11 was a dramatic one, that's for sure. Manchester City were behind for most of the game, but dug in deep to register a comeback against Southampton in the last 20 minutes. Liverpool decided to do them one better and leave it even late, as Sadio Mane netted the winner against Aston Villa in the 95th minute. Meanwhile, Cenk Tosun's equaliser for Everton was scored in the 97th minute. A late, late show in the Premier League on Matchday 11, albeit a very interesting one.
