The Conflict
Marc-André ter Stegen only has Neuer as his competition for the number one goalkeeper spot in Germany’s squad. In the recent Euro 2020 tournaments, Marc- André ter Stegen voiced his dissatisfaction with his lack of playtime with the German team. The 27-year-old Barcelona star wasn’t happy about the line ups and wished to play in the starting 11. Neuer responded to this by saying that his fellow teammate needs to be more supportive.
When asked if he would be playing for the world cup in 2022 Neuer said, “I don't know if I will still be there in 2022, because there are many factors that play a role in this regard. I have to see how my body is doing and how fit I'll be at that age”
According to reports, Manuel Neuer is seriously considering retirement from international football. His season at his club Bayern Munich has been amazing and he has gone on to win many accolades with the club. Individually too, Neuer has been at his prime. Germany is expected to host Euro 2024 and Manuel Neuer’s exit from international football will make ter Stegen the first choice to appear in the playing 11 for Germany. If Neuer does quit, that also gives Stegen the opportunity to play in the starting 11 for the World Cup in 2022.
