Spain and England will face off with each other in the finals of Euro 2024 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on Sunday. The match promises to be a spectacle as Spain's exuberant young team will lock horns with an England side that have been resilient throughout their road to the finals.
Heading into the Finals there is a lot of question marks over how Spain's youngsters will cope with the pressure of the Finals at Euros against an experienced England side who have been there before when they lost the Euro 2020 final against Italy.
With a lot of emphasis on Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal's age before the finals, former Manchester City and Chelsea player thinks that they can wreak havoc over England in Euro 2024 final.
Will the Pressure of Finals prove to be too much for Spain?
Spain has one of the most exciting teams in Europe with a young core that has dominated the Euros till now. They've won all six games in the tournament and scored a massive number of 13 goals.
Football pundit and former Irish footballer Terry Phelan opened up on Spain's lack of experience as he told Republic in a select media engagement that they won't be a big problem and they will come out freely.
“Well it's a difficult one that, because, you know, this young, inexperienced Spain side, they've beat Germany, they've beat France, they've scored 13 goals, they haven't lost a game, they're playing with excitement, they're playing freely, with self-expression, they're playing with guile, they're playing as if they've been in multiple tournaments and they've played all together. You don't really know where to stop them”, said Terry Phelan to the Republic.
However, Terry Phelan did think that England will pose a different set of challenge for the Spanish side.
“You know they'll (Spain) be looking at this game, they'll be looking at the England game and going ‘hang on a minute these guys know how to win games these guys know how to get it over the line these guys will be a tough nut to crack’ and it won't be easy for Spain as well as it won't be easy for England,” said Terry Phelan.
Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams to cause England big problems
'The Scuttler' further said thinks that given the way Spain performed against Germany and France they won't freeze under pressure against England.
“When we talk about Spain we're going to talk about this big game, they could come out and I don't think they'll freeze because they never froze against Germany they never froze against France and I don't see these young players freezing against England either. I think they'll relish the chance to show what they can do on the world stage. They've already shown it now and they're really grabbing the attention,” added Terry.
When talking about Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal, Terry Phelan had no doubt that none of Spain's dynamic youngsters will change their style due to the occasion. They will go out and come out firin on all cylinders.
“This is a different kind of game now this is a game which is a lot more pressure you're in the final uh the world's watching you it's England by the way and you know there's pressure on England and all as well as Spain but I don't think these young players of Nico Williams who's 21 years of age, and Lamine Yamal who's 17, I don't think these players will freeze. I think they'll go out there and have a good go of it,” added Terry Phelan.
Defence will decide the winner of the finals
According to Terry Phelan, this particular Euro finals is too close to call and the winner will be decided by how well do the England and Spain centre halves play.
“To tell you the truth. Like I said in the earlier interviews, I believe it's up to the back fours or the back fives, whoever plays in them, back fours or back fives. It's going to be a really key area in that defending third to keep these wonderful players quiet,” concluded Terry Phelan.
