Lionel Messi led Argentina to a successful Copa America run in 2024 as the side emerged victorious over a flamboyant Colombia. After the World Cup win in 2022, it is the second big win of the Messi-led La Albiceleste. But in the final, Messi sustained an injury and had to be subbed off. With tears in his eyes and an insanely swollen ankle, Messi could not return as Di Maria and Otamendi led the team until they won with a 1-0 lead. With Copa in the rear view mirror, Leo could return to franchise action in the MLS for Inter Miami CF. But will his injury restrict him from getting into action right away? A new update has surfaced.

Lionel Messi to Miss out From MLS Action After Sustaining a Swollen Ankle in Copan America Final

Lionel Messi had tears in his eyes when he exited the pitch during the Copa America Final. Visuals showcased the extent of his non-contact injury, as his right ankle was badly swollen, which made him unable to compete. Since the MLS season is up and running, Inter Miami would love to have their talisman back. But it looks like Messi won't return to action just yet, as Gerardo 'Tata' Martino says he will miss out on a couple of matches.

"He’s had a knock and the injury is there. We’ve got to have the studies and see what the results are.

"We always are in contact with the doctor of the Argentina team. We were kept constantly informed, but at the same time he is also very hesitant to give a final diagnosis until he’s had a scan," The Inter Miami coach said.

When asked on whether Messi could play this week, Martino said, "Leo? No, none. Well, I believe there is no chance but we have to see how his ankle is."

Messi went down in the 64th minute of Argentina's 1-0 victory over Colombia in the Copa America final, and he left the game with tears in his eyes. He headed straight for the Argentina bench after he lay on the ground for a few minutes before removing his right boot and leaving the pitch cautiously.
