The remarkable schedule provides a solution for Liverpool's hectic fixture list, as it had originally been mooted that the tie with Villa would be played on January 8, 2020 – the night that has been reserved for the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals, thus leading to another clash in fixtures.

Previous instances when teams played on consecutive days
Manchester United, 2001 (Premier League and League Cup)
Although Liverpool's situation is a rare one, yet some teams have faced it in the past. Their archrivals Manchester United is one of them as they played a Premier League game on November 4, 2001 co-incidentally against Liverpool at Old Trafford, which they won 3-1. A day later, United met Arsenal in their third round League Cup match at the erstwhile Highbury Park in North London but were defeated by a comprehensive 0-4 margin.
Arsenal, 2001
Arsenal hosted Charlton Athletic in their league game on November 4 itself at Highburg but staggeringly lost 2-4 despite having 27 shots on goal. However, the Gunners bounced back to defeat United in their League Cup match the very next day.
