Luka Modric set to end Real Madrid career in 2021 by running down contract

Former Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric is prepared to end his career at the Spanish capital in the summer of 2021, running down his contract in the process.

Real Mrid midfielder Luka Modric is set to remain at Santiago Bernabeu until his Real Mrid contract expires next year.  current Luka Modic contract that ties Croatian to club expires on June 30, 2021. Recent reports have put an end to speculation of Luka Modric moving away from Spanish capital during summer transfer window.

Serie A giants Inter Milan were keen on a Luka Modric transfer last year but midfielder has been impressive at Real Mrid in months leing up to suspension of LaLiga. Spanish outlet AS claim that Martin Odegaard was player identified to replace Luka Modric if midfield gem left club. Odegaard - currently on loan at Real Socied - has shown promising signs in his development and Real Mrid have been linked with bringing Norwegian back to his parent club. However, veteran midfielder Modric has been ninth-most utilized player at Real Mrid under manager Zinedine Zidane playing 1,904 minutes in all competitions.

As Luka Modric contract expires in summer of 2021, 34-year-old is expected to see out final year in agreement with Real Mrid at Santiago Bernabeu. Luka Modric reportedly informed coaching staff at Mrid that he was unable to play at highest level and would step aside to make way for emerging players due to his mediocre performances early in season. No Luka Modric contract extension, refore, was offered by Real Mrid towards 2018 Ballon d'Or winner. However, 34-year-old midfielder is now confident to continue playing his football for Los Blancos and running down his contract after rediscovering his form with Mrid in early stages of 2020.
