These are troubling times for Manchester United. There's quite a lot of distance between Manchester United and their top five rivals in the Premier League table at the moment. Perhaps United would be forgiven by their fans if they sat close to the top four places after a number of games in the Premier League so far. Languishing perilously close to relegation, however, has brought down the ire of the United fanbase upon their current squad.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho as manager of Manchester United in December last year. His arrival brought about a short burst of victories, with his first game in charge of the Red Devils ending in a 5-1 win over his former employers Cardiff City. Since then, after spending big in this summer's transfer window, Man United have started the season poorly, with a number of former players criticizing the club' style of play this season. Paul Scholes was among the strong voices that lamented United's poor showing in recent fixtures.

After another drab showing against Partizan Belgrade, a team that sit fifth in the Serbian SuperLiga, Manchester United required a penalty from Anthony Martial to grab three points at the Partizan Stadium. It's safe to say that Paul Scholes wasn't impressed with their laboured victory. Over seven months after the memorable victory in Paris, this was a Manchester United side that seemed unrecognisable from the side that beat Paris Saint-Germain. Speaking on the victory against Partizan Belgrade, Paul Scholes blasted United's lack of quality in the final third. Scholes went on to say that United played like a team of strangers since there seemed to be no link between United's midfield and their strikeforce. He also went on to say that United were poor on both ends of the pitch, despite new signing Harry Maguire starting in defence.

Ozil the solution?
Scholes went on to say that United would do well to sign Arsenal's Mesut Ozil to solve the problem of creativity in midfield. Scholes, who dictated United's play for years, feels that Ozil could be an answer to United's problems in the short term. With the German playmaker finding himself frozen out of the Arsenal squad by Unai Emery this season, Ozil could do with a rescue from a Premier League club this season.
