Viewers of Sunday's Australian A-League top of the table clash between leaders Sydney FC and second place Melbourne City were given a rare peek into the VAR decision process through a referee who officiated the match while wearing a microphone.

In the 24th minute, Sydney's Rhyan Grant was given a yellow card for a challenge on Melbourne City's Nathaniel Atkinson, but the yellow was changed to red and Grant sent off after a VAR review.
In the post-match show on broadcaster Fox Australia after the ten man Sky Blues 2-1 victory, a replay of the incident was shown including an audio feed of referee Kurt Ams as he consuted with the VAR before changing his decsion from yellow to red.

It was a rare behind the scenes look at the VAR process and comes on a weekend when video replay again generated global controversy after a pair of questionable decisions during Liverpool's 1-0 defeat of Wolves in the English Premier League.
