On November 5, 2024 Sporting CP stunned Manchester City 4-1 at Estádio José Alvalade in a breathtaking UEFA Champions League match. In the fourth minute, Phil Foden started City's score; however, Viktor Gyökeres responded with a goal in the 38th. Maximiliano Araújo swiftly added to Sporting's score after halftime, and Gyökeres guaranteed his hat-trick with two penalty penalties in the 49th and 80th minutes, thereby securing an impressive win as Sporting's Champions League campaign remained unbroken and ranked second in the group standings.

Haaland misses penalty and upstaged by hat trick scorer Gyokeres in the Champions League
Before their game, Sporting fans displayed a huge tifo thanking Rúben Amorim in his last home game before he takes over Manchester United.
Phil Foden then got City off to a flying start in the fourth minute, only the second goal Sporting has conceded in four games of the competition.

But Swedish forward Viktor Gyökeres scored a hat trick as Sporting came roaring back. Gyökeres first equalized in the 38th after a perfect through ball from Geovany Quenda, before Maximiliano Araújo made it 2-1 right after the break. Gyökeres then made it 3-1 from the penalty spot after Joško Gvardiol was penalized for a shove on Francisco Trincão in the area.
Haaland’s penalty hit the crossbar, before Gyökeres showed the Norwegian how it’s done with another spot kick at the other end to complete the scoring.

It is the first time since 2018 that City has lost three straight games, coming off a defeat to Tottenham in the English League Cup and a loss to Bournemouth in the Premier League.
“In my seven and a half years at the club, I don’t remember losing three games in a row,” City midfielder Bernardo Silva said.

Erling Haaland was upstaged by another striker from Scandinavia in the Champions League on Tuesday.
While Haaland missed a penalty for Manchester City, Viktor Gyokeres converted two spot kicks as part of his hat trick for Sporting in a 4-1 win for the Portuguese team.
Gyokeres, a Sweden international, is one of the hottest strikers in Europe at the moment and now has 21 goals in 17 games for Sporting this season. He is termed as the next Cristiano Ronaldo of Sporting CP and it is anticipated that Manchester United will eye him to bring to the Old Trafford under Amorem.
Haaland is widely regarded as the best striker in the world but he couldn’t put away his penalty after a handball. He stepped up and smashed his effort against the crossbar in the 69th.
At the other end, Gyokeres converted his in the 48th to make it 2-1 and did so again in the 80th to make it 4-1 to Sporting.
