When talking about Portugal's football team, the first names that spring to any football fan's mind are Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe. Over many years, these renowned sportsmen have made major contributions to their discipline. Pepe has just declared his retirement at 41, while Cristiano Ronaldo, 39, seems to be approaching the end of his professional football career too, therefore ending an era for both great players.

Cristiano Ronaldo sends an emotional message for retiring Pepe
Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal's captain, has shown his great respect for his fellow national Pepe, who formally retired from football on Thursday, August 8th. For more than ten years, the two have been national team teammates. They both shared the pitch at the club level too, during their youth at Sporting CP and during their career's peak at Real Madrid. Both legends went on to win numerous trophies together. However, the most special trophy came in 2016, when Portugal lifted the UEFA Euro, marking first ever major trophy in the nation's history.
At the age of 41 Pepe, considered as one of the best central defenders of his time, has chosen to end his remarkable career. Over 20 years, he has travelled both domestically and internationally in professional football.
Pepe has participated in 737 games across many leagues since his professional debut in the 2001–02 season, adding 42 goals and 36 assists for teams like Maritimo, Porto, Real Madrid, and Besiktas.
Portugal GOAT Cristiano Ronaldo paid a moving homage to his "brother," conveying their great "friendship" and "respect." The Al-Nassr star expressed his thoughts on Instagram ( Portuguese translated). Ronaldo on Instagram:
"No words to express how much you mean to me my friend. We won everything there was to win on the field, but the biggest achievement is the friendship and respect I have for you. You are unique, my brother."
As Pepe retired from football, it is evident that the world’s favourite Cristiano Ronaldo is also in the last phase of his career. He works day in and day out to be in the best of shape. He is contracted with Al-Nassr till the summer of 2025, with fans hoping for him to continue to play the sport post that. It all depends on the legend himself.
As of now, Ronaldo has returned to the Saudi club’s pre-season camp. He will be kicking off the Saudi Cup in the upcoming week. CR7 is still looking for his first major trophy with the SPL team.
