A late challenge from Son on Gomes meant that the South Korean international went in the books after referee Martin Atkinson issued a yellow card to the Tottenham forward. However, after closer observation and a VAR review, Martin Atkinson decided to issue a straight red card for the South Korean. Everton fans who were in sight of Andre Gomes from the stands were left horrified by the sight of his injury, so much so that many of them were pictured averting their gazes. Son, who left the pitch in tears after his red card, was left distraught at Gomes' injury.

Seamus Coleman consoles Son
After the game, Everton captain Seamus Coleman made his way to the Tottenham dressing room in order to console Heung-min Son. Son, who had his head in his hands after a look at Andre Gomes' ankle, was left devastated after seeing the extent of Gomes' injury. However, Seamus Coleman proceeded to console Son after seeing the South Korean international leave the pitch in tears. Coleman, who suffered a similar injury two years ago, sat with Son for five minutes and assured him that no blame was placed on him for the horrific injury. Andre Gomes was stretchered off the pitch after receiving medical treatment for some time.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino labelled the situation as "very unlucky". There seemed to be no malice in Son Heung-min's challenge. However, the South Korean was sent off after intervention from VAR. The Premier League then issued a statement saying that Son was sent off since his challenge had "endangered the opponent".
