Arsenal manager Unai Emery has confirmed that the club has sacked Granit Xhaka as the team’s captain. The move comes after Xhaka’s alleged fall-out recently with a section of the club's fans during a Premier League match against Crystal Palace.
The £35m midfielder has not played for Arsenal after an incident in which he was seen swearing at Arsenal fans when he was subbed off against Palace last month. However, Xhaka was quick to realise his mistake and issued an apology last week, but he also claimed that he had reached a boiling point because of abuse directed at his family. His actions were slammed by many Arsenal legends, including the likes of Ian Wright, who questioned his behaviour as captain of the club.
Aubameyang is the new captain
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has replaced Xhaka as the new captain. However, the striker has not travelled with the squad to Portugal. Therefore, it remains to be seen as to who leads the side in the North London club's upcoming Europa League match against Vitoria Guimaraes. Xhaka’s future at the club beyond January 2020 now looks in serious doubt with rumours of his departure doing the rounds in the English media.
Xhaka was appointed as captain of the club a few months back after a dressing room poll amongst players in pre-season, leaving Emery with no option, but to follow the majority suit. When asked if Xhaka would play for Arsenal again, Emery gave no direct response and said that the club needed to take some circumstantial decisions after the events that have unfolded recently. It is difficult, therefore at this point, to predict when Xhaka might be seen back on the field, given that Arsenal’s league form has faltered badly and the manager is under growing pressure.
