In the UEFA Nations League Group A contest, Portugal defeated Croatia 2-1. Portugal's score was started by Diogo Dalot in the seventh minute, then Cristiano Ronaldo scored yet another goal in the thirty-fourth. But in the 41st minute, Dalot inadvertently scored an own goal. Portugal had 15 shots and 6 shots on target, while Croatia had 13 shots and 4 shots on target, therefore producing a 50% possession for both sides. Portugal comes second in League A Group 1 rankings with this win. The game was at Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica.
Cristiano Ronaldo netted his career’s 900th goal against Croatia in the UEFA Nations League
Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo achieved a historic record on Thursday, during a Nations League game between Portugal and Croatia, by scoring his 900th career goal. Ronaldo's 34th minute goal at the Estádio da Luz raised Portugal's advantage to 2-0. He completed a cross from Nuno Mendes with a simple close range volleyball.
Portugal won away from the game 2-1. Ronaldo was clearly affected when his shot landed the net, lying on the grass in joy of reaching yet another major career milestone.
Ronaldo, 39, today has an amazing 131 international goals. During his club career, Real Madrid has 450 goals by Cristiano Ronaldo; Manchester United has 145; Juventus has 101; and his current squad, Al Nassr, has 68 so far. Besides, he scored five goals for Sporting Lisbon, where his professional career started.
With 859 goals, Lionel Messi—the Argentine football great, who is second on the all-time scoring list. Combining his records from both club and international play, Ronaldo has become the first male footballer to surpass 900 goals in official matches with his latest success. According to AP news, Ronaldo said:
“It means a lot,” Ronaldo said after Portugal’s 2-1 win. “It was a milestone I wanted to reach for a long time. I knew I would reach this number, because as I continue to play, it would happen naturally.”
“It was emotional because it’s a milestone,” he said. “It seems like any other milestone, but only I know, and the people around me, how hard it is to work every day, to be physically and psychologically fit, to score 900 goals. It’s a unique milestone in my career.”
Cristiano Ronaldo will now be seen in action for Portugal in another UEFA Nations League encounter against Scotland on Monday, September 9, 2024.
