Former Portugal international Amorim took over as Lisbon's coach in 2020 and he was an instant hit. In 2021, the team finally won the Portuguese championship after a 19-year drought. After winning it once again in 2024, he was linked to positions at Manchester City , Liverpool, and FC Barcelona before being brought on board to take Erik ten Hag's place.

United's efforts to bring in top-tier managers and splurge over $1 Billion on player signings hasn't worked out properly, as they have failed to get it right. Despite having some success under Erik ten Hag, United looked to be stuck in a puddle. The inclusion of Ruben is a huge attempt in revitalizing the team.
Amorim is United's sixth permanent coach since legendary manager Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 after winning his 13th Premier League title. Ferguson won 28 major titles, including two Champions Leagues, and his legacy has overshadowed all of his successors.
