Among the legendary players of FC Barcelona—along with Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, Carles Puyol, Busquets, and Xavi—the newest to leave their mark is Sergio Roberto. His term at the club has been distinguished by his unshakeable loyalty and enthusiasm, making his departure in 2024 a momentous occasion in Barcelona's history.

Barcelona star footballer Sergio Roberto has formally declared he is leaving the team. Rising from Barcelona's junior program La Masia, the 32-year-old first-team player debuted in the 2010–11 campaign.

Roberto made 373 appearances throughout all competitions during his tenure with the club, adding 19 goals and 43 assists. Starting 15 times, last season he scored three goals and gave three assists in 24 matches under Xavi's direction. It proved out to be his last season with Barcelona.

Roberto has chosen to leave Camp Nou despite rumours that he might stay there longer. He sent his goodbye words in an Instagram post, saying—as translated from Catalan—:

“Culers, the time has come to thank you for all this journey we’ve made together.

"My history with Barca began when I was 14. From Reus to Barcelona, fulfilling my dream of wearing the Blaugrana jersey, passing through La Masia where I spent my best years as a teenager and where I learnt all the values of this club. Growing as a player, above all as a person and making friendships that will last a lifetime.

“In the first team it has been 11 years full of unique moments and experiences. From the debut to being the captain and winning all the possible titles. I have shared the dressing room with my idols and with the best players and coaches in the world. A true privilege.

“I leave being very proud. Proud to have given everything for 18 years. To have always put the interests of the team and the club above my own. And proud to be the captain of the club of my life.

“Thank you very much to the club, to all the staff, and to the fans, for making these 18 years the best possible journey. And to conclude thanks to my family for always being by my side because without you none of this would have been possible. Visca el Barca. Forever.”

Sergio Roberto’s next club is still unknown but will be announced soon. However, he leaves FC Barcelona with 22 trophies, which includes 2 UEFA Champions Leagues and 7 La Liga. It is anticipated that he might look for a club in Spain, but interest from Italian clubs and lucrative offers from the Saudi Pro League could see some new dynamics.
