FA Revealed Thomas Tuchel as the New England Football Team Manager
The Football Association revealed on Wednesday Tuchel's England management appointment. Signing an 18-month deal, the seasoned German coach will be covering the 2026 World Cup, scheduled for Mexico, United States, and Canada. Along with assistant coach Anthony Barry, Tuchel succeeds Gareth Southgate and formally starts his job on January 1, 2025.
Particularly after Southgate's tenure saw the Three Lions reach the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the finals of both the 2020 and 2024 European Championships, England supporters are hopeful Tuchel will lead the team to fresh heights. Though Pep Guardiola was the FA's first pick, Tuchel was chosen after leaving Bayern Munich in May. Having had success at teams such as Borussia Dortmund, PSG , Chelsea, and Bayern, Tuchel has a plethora of knowledge and marks his first trip into international coaching. According to the GOAL, Thomas Tuchel on joining England said:
"I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already. To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.
"Working closely with Anthony as my assistant coach, we will do everything we can to make England successful and the supporters proud. I want to thank the FA, in particular Mark and John, for their trust and I am looking forward to starting our journey together.”
Following in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson from Sweden and Italy's Fabio Capello, Tuchel becomes the third foreign manager guiding the England national team and the first from Germany.
Interim coach Lee Carsley will be running the club until Tuchel formally steps in in January 2025. While Tuchel's first head coach will take place during the international break in March, England has booked Nations League games against Greece and Ireland in November.
